Graduating

This is called Graduating.

Now who would have thought?
When we were tiny cute babies in a cot?
Our parents worried over us
And over the years, constantly kicked up a fuss.
Sometime in our lives we probably have failed a test
Even thought we tried our very best.
But there is no denying that the long hard years of education have brought us to this stage
As we etch our final studying days (for most of us) on this date.
Now who would have thought that just a mere throw of our mortar boards
Would be such a sweet reward?

Now we couldn't have done it alone,
not without our parents and our profs to kindly throw us a bone.
Our parents have provided us love, care, support in the hopes that we would thrive,
Not to mention the money that we'd have to repay for the rest of our lives...
Our profs have handed us their knowledge and expertise
Accompanied by constant nagging and covert rage we'd feebly try to appease.
I, today, speak for all my friends that every one of us is eternally grateful
For your modules...
and for all your rules...
For being cool..
For to not be... we would be great fools.

Now to my friends:

Before university, we've wandered in the dark for years
Being oblivious and impervious to the rest of the world without fears.
We have all tried to study Sociology for three years
Tried to get to know the deep thoughts and be best friends with Marx, Durkheim and Weber without tears.
All these time we buried ourselves in our readings together with an occasional beer
And majority of the time we didn't bother to make friends with our fellow peers.
Then we got to our final wonderful spectacular eventful Honours year,
where we had a few great individuals who made the effort to switch gears.
We had chalet parties, ice-cream outings, U-town picnics and other random gatherings
where we'd laugh, eat and maybe chat in a tone that was bantering.
Our Soci Seminar room was the place where we had nearly all our lessons
And I'd like to think that that it was THERE that we gained enlightenment and all became fine intellectual specimens.
Now the Honours room was pretty chic, as far as I could recall
It had comfy colored sofas, a fridge and even a soccer ball.
We'd have project discussions, some catnaps or sharing the occasional gossip
Creating special memories that strengthened our friendships.
In short, we were suddenly a cool soci cohort
That probably every other major was really jealous about and wanted a special passport.
Now, I refuse to name names to thank people for if I were to forget anyone
I'd probably get a severe beating right after I'm done.
But I sincerely thank every person who made our cohort just a little closer
And us not very loser.

But anyway my fellow Soci friends,
it's safe to say that we'd had a fantastic run right till the end.
We've survived the insane deadlines, not insane due to our profs' topic inventions,
but rather due to our constant facebooking and much procrastination.
In these four years, we've learnt a great deal
In order to earn our own future meals.

And despite the fact that we've all had different beginnings to our education,
We ARE ending this particular stage of our lives together and will begin the next in anticipation.
I won't forget the wonderful time I had in NUS
And I thank all of you my fave soci mass.
All of us will be severely put to the test
And therefore I wish us all the very best.
